About Justin Dougherty

Called, “astounding,” (Musical Intelligencer) and, “a rising star,” (Bay Area Reporter) dynamic youngcellist Justin Dougherty has performed solo, chamber music, and orchestral concerts on many of the greatstages in the United States and Europe.Mr. Dougherty is a versatile and experimental musician with interests in traditional and modern chambermusic and music for eclectic instrumentations.

Currently, Mr. Dougherty is the cellist in the HodgsonString Quartet, a University of Georgia ensemble-in-residence. Recent projects include collaborationswith cellists Yo-Yo Ma, John Moran, and David Russell, pianists Judith Gordon and Tae Kim, sopranoMeredith Mecum, and violinists Risa Browder and Stanley Ritchie, among others.Dedicated to the efforts of living composers and the expansion of the cello repertoire, Mr. Dougherty hasmade premieres of more than thirty new works by composers such as Donald Martino, David Rakowski,Gunther Schuller, Steven Stucky, John Tavener, Andy Vores and Roger Zahab.

His ongoing new-musicrecital series Queering the Pitch has been heard by more than 1,000 people in venues across the UnitedStates.Mr. Dougherty received his Master of Music degree from The Boston Conservatory where he was theassistant to his mentor, the renowned cellist Rhonda Rider. Currently, Mr. Dougherty is University Fellowat the University of Georgia where he teaches courses in the University Community Music School.

HOUSTON -- Cellist Justin Dougherty will present a recital of music by gay composers at
AvantGarden. Other performances, beginning June 27, 2011 in Athens, GA, have taken place across the
country. Cities which have played host to Mr. Dougherty’s ambitious program include Atlanta, Boston,
Baltimore, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Tampa, FL. The recital, which features music for solo cello
by gay composers Benjamin Britten, Robert Muczynski, Ned Rorem, and Houston composer Dominick
DiOrio, is the first in a series of ‘Queering the Pitch’ recitals which seek to introduce and celebrate the
great works of art being created by LGBT composers.
